Creating Zesty Salad RecipesThe single largest menu category that continues to expand our palates is salad recipes. Today salads can also be classified as a 'meal in a bowl' due to their nutritional value. Already being high in fibre vitamins, minerals, they are full of volume, but often too low in calories. So if we need to achieve right amount of nutrients per meal 'toppings' does the job. Toppings not only add texture, colour, contrast and flavours to salads, thereby, preventing the routine boredom of consuming a single staple regularly. Vegetarian toppings can range from nuts, seeds, croutons, dried fruits which pump in fairly descent amount of carbohydrates and fats. While the protein add-ons can come with whole grains and lean meat. A popular concept adopted by the food industry to woo health conscious eaters. If salads are a part of your daily routine then here are a couple of ideas for you to twist and teak. Light salad recipes As a dieter or wait watcher I would build my salads on a combination of my favourite low calorie vegetables - light greens (cabbage or iceberg lettuce) cucumbers, multi coloured peppers, radish, carrots, spring/red onions and mushrooms. For toppings - I'd add simple dried fruit (raisins) and fruit toppings (chopped apples), olives. If some fat is needed then fried noodles, fired onions and cheese would be a good choice. Homemade Dressing Mix Variety Pack Darker green salad recipes For higher dose of fibre and vitamins some good choices would be spinach, arugula, watercress, romaine lettuce and mustard greens. To add more punch (more calories) I'd decide on adding whole-wheat, toasted seeds (sesame) or barley toppings with a dash of lime juice. AeroGarden 6-Pod Seed Kit Fruit salad recipes If you are a fruit lover, benefit from a range of winning combinations. Consider trying the range beet salad, pineapple coleslaw, nutty peach, or tropical fruits with a zesty Hawaiian dressing. Like salads, dressings too are an important add-on to flavour salads. However, most dressings tend to be high in calories such as blue cheese dressing or French dressing (due to creaminess). So it is best to buy a fat free dressing. Or prepare a low calorie one by using a healthy liquid vegetable or olive oil and mixing it with acidic ingredients such as vinegar or fresh lemons, or oranges. I hope these ideas come handy in preparing some really cool salads recipes. Haribo Gummi Candy Move from salad recipes to food for thought Move to appetizer recipes Return to homepage |
