Easy to make Appetizers – Steamed Vegetables with Water Chestnuts

Water chestnuts this knobby vegetable with the papery brown skin is a staple in Chinese cooking.
It’s best if you can find fresh ones for your recipe for the perfect sweet flavour. While the canned water chestnuts can be used, particularly, if they are being added for texture.
Water chestnuts are mainly added to stir-fries, stuffing’s, and dumpling fillings for extra texture and a sweet flavour.

Ingredients:
1-2 tbsp – Sesame oil
6-8 No – Green cabbage leaves chopped
4-6 No – Water chestnuts chopped
4 No – Mushrooms chopped
1 No – Bell pepper chopped
1 No – Onion chopped
1 tbsp – Soy Sauce
1 tbsp – Ginger
1/8 tsp – Sugar
2 tbsp – Sake or Chinese wine
1/4 tsp – Red chilli powder
1 tsp – Chinese 5 spice powder
1 tbsp – Garlic
Salt to taste

Method:
The vegetables should be washed dried and cut medium thick. Then set aside.
Whisk all the ingredients except vegetables. Then add the vegetables and mix thoroughly.
Then put them on double line boiler or a steamer and steam till vegetables are very firm to bite into.
Remove each batch from the steamer as soon they are cooked. Wrap them in a foil  to keep warm.
Serve with soy sauce and chilli oil for dipping.

Alternativley, you can stir fry all the ingredients over a high flame and serve.
