Appetizer RecipesAppetizer Recipes Appetizers are small titbits of food, which, are central to most occasion based meals. They usually act like a teaser, to stimulate the palate, before the main meal arrives. Different cuisines have different names for appetizers. For instance they are referred as antipasto in Italy, zakuski in Russia, tapas in Spain and so on. But, originally when appetizers were first invented in the 3rd century B.C. Athenians referred to them as 'hors d'oeuvre' (finger foods). Usually a typical 'hors d'oeuvre' buffet comprised of 5 small plates. Each carried garlic, sea urchins, cockles and small pieces of sturgeon which was offered to diners. Initially, though this kind of a meal was considered with much disdain. But it is not so today. Selecting the right appetizers The selection of an appetizer should be based in conjunction with main meal. This means, when deciding what to serve, choose foods that differ in flavour, but complement the main course. There are many such different types of appetizers to choose from Hot appetizers - Crispy warm bites of stuffed cheese, cheese bites, cottage cheese, vegetable fritters and so on. Cold Appetizers - Mostly bread based delights made with spreads and/or vegetable stuffing's, tortilla rolls, cottage cheese cocktails and so on. Dips - Simple mixtures prepared ahead of time and can be refrigerated and served as a cold dipping sauce or served at room temperature with hot appetizers. Dips are normally served with raw vegetables (carrot stick, courgettes), crackers, chips, tortillas or pita. Nibbles - Along side the hand made appetizers these ready snacks like salted nuts, crisps, olives etc are also offered, to complement drinks. The best course is to offer a limited mix of both hot and cold appetizers to suit different tastes. While making sure not to over stuff the guests and ruin the main meal.
